eastern market

flowersSara and I made a Saturday morning visit to Eastern Market, just east of the Capitol. The market itself is a veritable feast of fresh produce, meats, fish and produce. I left with bags full of fresh berries, squash and basil. Across the street is the Eastern Market Flea Market, where vendors peddled random wares from furniture to vintage advertisements. I found some lovely Indian-print throw pillow covers from one merchant, and pages from an 1876 copy of Alice in Wonderland (including the tale of the Walrus and the Carpenter!) from another.

Shopping done, Sara and I then stood in line for over an hour for a late breakfast at the Market Lunch. Despite the wait (or perhaps because of it), the food was fantastic. I had (most of) an enormous tomato/basil/mozarella omelette with a side of grits, while the proprietor talked Sara into trying out the salmon omelette and a blueberry buckwheat (“bluebuck”) pancake.

Here are the photos.
