avast

It’s a bit late in the day to be bringing it up, but I’ll mention it all the same.

Today, September 19, once again marks the annual “Talk Like a Pirate Day.” How does one commemorate this holiday? Quite simple — just do what the holiday name says, and sprinkle bits of pirate lingo in your everyday speech, mateys.

The “event” received international attention last year when humorist Dave Barry mentioned it in his column. Barry has gotten in the pirate spirit again this year, at least on his blog, starting with:

ARRRRRR

Arrrrrr.

and continuing later in the day with:

AVAST

Today we be on N-P-ARRRRRRRRRR.

The official Talk Like a Pirate Web site offers some introductory lessons in pirate-ese, allowing enthusiasts to expand their vocabulary beyond “Arrrrr.”

I mentioned the holiday to Dan — who, earlier this summer, appeared to thoroughly enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean (or at the very least, the whole “pirate” thing … “What’s a pirate’s favorite fast food joint?” “Arrrrrrrrby’s!”) — and he was already a few steps ahead of me, having printed out a notice about the holiday and posted it at work a full week ago.

(Because brain is tired and lacking creativity at the moment, I’ll just conclude with … )

Arrrrrr.

(Thanks to Dari for the link.)

Walking to the Metro this morning, I passed a black truck with a license plate that amused me to no end:
