zip it

Ben Fry at MIT put together this really nifty map of all the ZIP codes in the United States. Start typing in a ZIP code, and you can see, digit by digit, what geographic area is covered by various ranges of numbers. (For example, zip codes beginning with the number “2” encompass Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Northern Virginia — Arlington and Alexandria — ZIP codes begin with “22;” all South Carolina ZIP codes begin with “29.”) Narrow it down to a specific five-digit ZIP code, and it will identify the city.
