acquisitions

The Newseum, the DC-based journalism museum, just published a list of its 2003 acquisitions — most notably including Arizona Republic reporter Don Bolles’s car, which was mangled by a car bomb in 1976.

Bolles, who covered organized crime for the Republic, later died of injuries sustained in the explosion. The paper published a special report about him on the 25th anniversary of his death.

There’s something creepy — yet ghoulishly irresistible — about seeing something like that in a museum. The setting invites scrutiny and examination. If nothing else, it’s a powerful reminder of the dangers that some journalists face in doing their jobs.
