contributions of women
I ran across an interesting factoid this evening while doing research for my paper. According to a report on opensecrets.org, a campaign finance Web site sponsored by the Center for Responsive Politics, while women are contributing to the George W. Bush and John Kerry campaigns in roughly the same proportions (31 percent for Bush vs. 34 percent for Kerry), women who identify themselves as homemakers are fare more likely to contribute to the Bush campaign. ("Analysis: Female Donors to Bush and Kerry" - 04/14/04)
Women without an income-earning occupation tend to send most of their contributions to Republicans, while women with incomes separate from their spouses tend to give most of their money to Democrats.
There's a chart of contributions by candidate and gender as well.
Because gender is not included in the official donor information submitted to the Federal Election Commission, the Center for Responsive Politics in this case guessed at donor genders, and only included in its study donors whose gender it could surmise based on first names. Therefore, it's not the most scientific of studies, but still interesting.
