gunsanity

Am I the only one who thinks this is a total recipe for disaster? The latest stroke of brilliance by the Arizona State Legislature:

The House approved a bill Wednesday to make it legal to take guns in bars and restaurants if the bearers aren’t drinking alcohol and if the establishments don’t opt out.

I mean… it sorta sounds like a bad idea; however, I think it’s a good law. The right to bear arms doesn’t end just because you want to hang out in a bar.

I believe in holding people responsible for their actions, not trying to protect them from themselves. I know that might not seem like it applies here, but I think it does.

In the end, (that is, beyond the immediate fallout from this law), there might be more shootings in bars. But that doesn’t mean this law is to blame — the individuals are.

The Arizona State Senate killed the bill, by a 15-13 vote. (“State Senate votes 15-13 to keep guns out of bars” - 05/26/04)

On a related note, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart lampooned (RealPlayer video) the proposed law a couple weeks ago.

Looks like they’re at it again. The difference this time around: The people with the guns aren’t allowed to drink. (Arizona Republic: “‘Guns in bars’ bill back for 2nd shot” - 02/15/05)
