train wreck

Looks like Metro and its Red Line passengers are having a bad day, too.

This afternoon, an empty train rolled backwards and collided with a Red Line train stopped at the platform at the Woodley Park station, injuring 20 people. (Washington Post: “20 Injured in Crash of 2 Red Line Trains” - 11/03/04) The photo tells the story pretty well.

Metro certainly has had its share of problems of late, from a train derailment at National Airport a year or two ago to the fires, delays and derailments that have plagued the Red Line this year. An accident of this magnitude, however, is shocking. It’s a miracle that more people weren’t hurt more seriously.

Comments

This photo, which shows the reopened Woodley Park platform with one track still occupied by the wreckage, does a pretty striking job of telling the story, too. It still seems unreal.
