lotto loser

The Washington Post Magazine this weekend has a sad follow-up story about Jack Whittaker, the West Virginian who won a $314 million Powerball jackpot back in 2002 and pledged to donate much of it to charity. The massive windfall led to turmoil and personal tragedy for Whittaker, his family and community members in his hometown of Hurricane, W.Va. The article gets harder to read as the story unfolds and turns bleaker and bleaker … Yet another story about sudden wealth, human weakness and greed turning lives sour. That’s such a sad story.
