I’m on Merriam-Webster’s “word of the day” e-mail list, and sometimes I wonder if there’s some kind of connection or meaning implied between the word sent out and current events. Take today, for example: The day after the president’s State of the Union address, the word of the day is “jingoism,” defined as “extreme chauvinism or nationalism marked especially by a belligerent foreign policy.”
