such great heights

dramatic arches inside the National Cathedral

On our last day of local sightseeing, Mom and I visited the Washington National Cathedral (a first for me). The imposing building is much newer than I’d expected: Construction began in 1907, but was not completed until 1990. (However, various areas of the facility were put into use as they were completed, so parts of the cathedral were open decades before the whole facility was finished.) The interior is amazing, with its dramatic ceilings, plentiful arches, bright stained glasswork and themed side chapels. Excellent fodder for spiritual contemplation, architecture-inspired drooling and photo geekery.
