oscar-rific
TiVo: It’s really the only way to watch an awards show. Start watching about 45 minutes after the show’s begun, fast forward through the commercials and boring bits, and you’re good! I mean, I’m only really in it to find out who won and check out what all the starlets are wearing anyway.
More Oscar stuff:
- With a photo slideshow, Slate’s Julia Turner muses about the increasing bland uniformity of awards show fashion. Where have all the Bjork swans gone? (“Red Carpet Blues: How Oscar fashion got so boring” - 02/25/05)
- Speaking of photo slideshows, the New York Times Magazine has a beautiful series of black-and-white portraits of actors (not all Oscar-nominated) who turned in wonderful performances in 2004.
- Slate’s John Swansburg wonders if often-controversial comedian Chris Rock, this year’s Oscar host, is actually a conservative at heart. (“Chris Rock: The William F-ing Buckley of stand-up” - 02/24/05)
- On the radio program Marketplace, a tax lawyer explained how all the free schwag that Oscar attendees get — from the goodie bags to the dresses to the bling — can be considered taxable income — even if the goods are just on loan for the occasion. (“Oscar fashions” - 02/25/05)
- Gossip blog supreme Defamer is liveblogging the awards ceremony tonight. It’s gloriously catty.
