the fugliest thing i ever did see

It’s not an entirely new phenomenon to see celebrity magazines on occasion spatter their covers with photos of celebs not at their best (re: in “normal” clothes and without makeup, looking human, natty and mortal like the rest of us). And making fun of bad attempts at “fashion” isn’t all that new, either. But lately, the rich and famous seem to be making it way too easy with a new trend in “fugly” chic. (Salon.com: “The good, the bad and the fugly” - 03/08/05)

“Being ugly implies a plainness; there’s no shock to it, and there’s no sense of being taken aback by something’s hideousness,” wrote [Heather] Cocks, 27, in an e-mail. “Ugly is straightforward. But when you’re fugly, you are fantastically, furiously ugly — the level of atrociousness is more of a shock — ‘Oh my GOD, what was she THINKING? Oh NO!’” (Picture a barefoot Britney in a public bathroom.) “That, to me, makes fugly a notch or five worse than ugly.”

Calling someone out on it, she adds, “is just our way of pointing out to them that they’ve had a hand in their own sartorial idiocy.”

Heather Cocks is one of the women behind the ultra-catty fashion blog Go Fug Yourself, which skewers bad celebrity fashion on a daily basis. A sample of their work, from a recent takedown:

Dear Soap Star Lauralee Bell:

Are you so young and restless that you forget to finish getting dressed? These look like elaborate underclothes, and your “wrap” looks like you spread the legs of some black pantyhose. You look unfinished. I’m not sure what is happening here. Please advise.

Thanks,
Heather.

This site may become my next catty celebrity guilty pleasure, next to the Defamer. ‘Fug’ isn’t as witty, nor as frequently updated, but there’s still some kind of catty thrill in seeing bad outfits getting lampooned.

I’m not so sure that a woman with the last name “Cocks” should spend her time throwing stones. No matter how much it makes me giggle…

The Fug Girls made the Wall Street Journal today: (“Fashion Trash Talk Is a Big Blog Hit For the ‘Fug Girls’” - 09/28/05)

The “Fug Girls,” as Ms. Cocks and Ms. Morgan have become known, have sold ads on their site to Random House and Viacom. The music video channel VH1 tapped them for a show called “Awesomely Badder Fashion,” and MSNBC.com hired them to offer instant red-carpet commentary for the Oscars. They’re regularly quoted in Star magazine
