another rumor debunked

Yet another rumor / “wouldn’t this be nice?” supposition I sort of wanted to be true has now been debunked. Reuters reports that Bono, lead singer of U2 is, in fact, not in the running to lead the World Bank. (“Bono Not in Running for World Bank- Lobby Group” - 03/11/05)

“I can’t believe I need to say this, but there are no circumstances in which Bono would be nominated or accept the World Bank job,” said Jamie Drummond, executive director of DATA — or Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa — for which the Irish rocker campaigns to raise awareness of Africa’s problems.

“Bono is flattered to be mentioned for such an important job but DATA does its best work from the outside.”

It seems like a silly idea, anyway — although it could have worked, given Bono’s skills at shilling and schmoozing. I would think that’s all his job would require, anyway; leave the real policy formulation to the trained / educated folks in the organization.

Earlier this week, Slate ran an explainer about the job responsibilities of the World Bank president. (“If Bono Ran the World Bank …” - 03/07/05)
