cherry blossom girl

a cherry blossom from last yearAfter a long Monday, a day made gray and dreary by seemingly unremitting dark skies, fog and cold rain, I arrived home from work around 7. Slinging my bags over one shoulder and my dry cleaning over the other, I headed toward the house, concentrating on avoiding stepping in large puddles with my canvas shoes. Next to the basement door, though, something unexpected caught my eye, and I stopped short, letting out a small squeal of glee as I leaned in closer to investigate in the dim light.

It was my first cherry blossom sighting of the season.

Tourists aside, cherry blossom season has become one of my favorite times of year. It’s hard not to start the day on a good note when I can step outside and see pretty flowers in bloom as I walk to the car. Just the sight of the blossoms brings out an involuntary smile.

It’s happy. It’s cheerful. It’s spring — and a sign that the dreariness of winter may finally be over.

Comments

A commenter on Flickr pointed out that this flower is actually a kind of magnolia, rather than a cherry blossom.

It’s still pretty. :)
