election

artwork by laura stanton - the washington postBig in the news today: The beginning of the papal conclave, in which all the cardinals (under 80 years old) sequester themselves inside the Sistine Chapel to vote on who becomes the next pope of the Roman Catholic church.

Last week, I wrapped up an interactive graphic (based on a print graphic produced by the Post) about the papal selection process. All the ritual and secrecy is rather fascinating.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you must check out the papal brackets to help you keep track of what’s happened in the conclave so far.

True to form, The Daily Show had its own take on the papal succession process (including the “papplication” for lay Catholics to apply for the job). Funny stuff. (And speaking of The Daily Show, I must have this. Saves me from having to make my own DVD from the episodes I’ve saved up on my DVR.)
