old town wifi
I noticed this item (heavily condensed here) in the April 2005 newsletter published by the city of Alexandria:
City to Pilot Free, Outdoor, Wireless Internet AccessThe City will launch a pilot project this month to provide free, wireless Internet acces in public spaces … The pilot project will cover the King Street corridor in Old Town between Washington Street and the waterfront, including Market Square and the City Marina. Depending on building locations and other conditions, coverage will be available for some distance around that corridor in each direction…
In addition to providing a convenient service for users, the City hopes that this project will stimulate economic development by providing a new reason for visitors and tourists to come to Alexandria. The service will also be used to promote Alexandria’s image as a high-tech community…
If the pilot project is successful, coverage may be expanded to other public spaces and pedestrian corridors in the City.
Whee! Free WiFi! Granted, it’s not in my neighborhood, but it’s yet another reason why I should go down to Old Town more often than I do (currently not at all). Just for the change of scenery alone, it might be nice to go down to the waterfront and work under the shade of a big leafy tree.
Comments
Woo hoo. Sounds *much* better than our old haunt of Common Grounds ;-).
I’ll meet you under the big Elm…
