not at all creepy

I came home from New York on Saturday to find a memo on my door notifying me that there had been an attempted late-night break-in at a nearby ground-floor apartment (not my building, but part of the same cluster). And this morning, I saw this handwritten notice by the front door of my building as I headed out to work:

We made the news!
3 peeping-tom incidents yesterday in our area!
1 actual break-in!
Close the door tightly!

A search of the city police Web site pulled up brief reports about the incidents. One of the peeping tom incidents occurred early in the morning on my block; the other two were elsewhere in my neighborhood. (Although, for all I know, the peeping toms could have been would-be burglars.) No arrests as yet in any of the four cases, as far as I know.

My apartment is on an upper floor, I habitually try to make sure all my windows and doors are locked, and my neighborhood is pretty safe … but I’m still creeped out.

It’s not so much that there’s a peeping tom (creepy in and of itself) but that someone chose to write the “made the news!” memo with the same overly cheery exclamation points I came to expect from my high-school cheerleader lab partner. Maybe said memo penned by the very same peeper?

Yuk, that’s icky. I’m realizing now how good I had it in the U.S. I haven’t met a foreigner here yet who hasn’t been robbed and even walking to work is dangerous if you carry a bag with you… I’ve never had to be so cautious 24 hours a day. Stay safe, ok? :)
