silver surfer

BBC News uses a novel term to describe older Internet users: silver surfers. It’s a cute play on words, particularly if you’re a comic book aficionado. I’d never heard the term used with respect to a particular online demographic before, but apparently it’s making the rounds, at least in Britain, where there’s an organization that’s sponsored an annual Silver Surfers Day since 2002.

On a related note, it’s funny that I came across this the same day my team at work had a lunchtime meet-and-greet with some of the folks from AARP.org, where we heard about some of the challenges they face in serving their online audience, which skews older and includes people with varying levels of computer experience and accessibility needs.
