pile up

I’m packing up my apartment, getting ready to move in about a week, and my self-assigned task for the night is boxing up my books.

I have a lot of books.

I can’t wholly blame that fact on grad school. While I certainly accumulated a bevy of books during my time at Georgetown, I’ve always been something of a bookworm. And I never really think about how many books I own until I have to move them.

My first step in boxing everything up has been to sort my books by size, so that it’s easier to stack them in blocks within the boxes. It’s turned up some strange juxtapositions of books and writers that have absolutely nothing in common, such as Bridget Jones’s Diary and Walter Benjamin’s Illuminations. Or Hunter S. Thompson next to Edith Wharton.
