hurricane watching

Hurricane Katrina; image from NOAA

It took a while to get going, but the major news outlets finally jumped on the hurricane apocalypse bandwagon around midday yesterday. Admittedly, even I hadn’t paid too much attention to Katrina and the potential devastation it might cause in Louisiana and neighboring states until I saw how obsessively Rob was monitoring the National Hurricane Center and other weather-related sites on Saturday.

Our friend Steve is a copy editor for the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The last time Rob talked to him this weekend, he was debating whether to drive up to Baton Rouge or to weather the storm in the Times-Picayune newsroom. Here’s hoping he’s staying safe, where ever he ended up going.

Someone else at the Times-Picayune has been keeping a blog about how he and other folks are weathering the storm, with some well-written descriptions of what’s going on in and around the newspaper’s building. Weirdly, he’s only just started adding timestamps to his entries, and it looks like he’s adding those by hand. There haven’t been any new posts for about an hour, and one of his most recent posts was about flooding in the Times-Picayune cafeteria; hopefully everything’s okay over there.

(Thanks to Rob for the NOLA blog link.)
