experiments in super macro
My new camera, a Canon PowerShot S2 IS, arrived last Wednesday, but amid all the hubub of moving, I didn’t get a chance to actually start playing with it until this weekend. (And, believe me, it took an incredible amount of self-discipline not to toy with the camera instead of hauling boxes.)
I’m still getting a feel for the camera — it has a lot more power than my Digital Elph S230 — but I know already that I’m going to be able to do quite a lot with this thing as I learn how to tinker with its settings and exercise a greater level of control over the photos I take.
In the meantime, I’ve been gleefully employing my favorite feature so far — “super macro” — to take extreme close-up shots of mundane objects around the apartment. I’ll take it out and shoot “real” photos sometime soon, I hope, once the apartment is in a reasonable state.

My S2IS macro function does not seem to work properly as compared to my A80. Even the SuperMacro mode does not appear after repeat pressing of the macro button as recommended in the guide book. Can you please tell me how do you work the macro mode in the S2IS other than just press the macro button. And how to sharpen the image manually? Thanks.
W.K.
I’ve found that, to shift from normal to macro to Super Macro mode, I have to press the macro button twice, or just hold it down, until I see the macro icon (a flower) with an “S” in the middle. Once SuperMacro is active, the image in my viewscreen may be fuzzy for a moment, but, once I half-press the shutter button, everything will suddenly snap into focus.
I believe you can only use Super Macro if you’re using one of the manual camera settings (P, Tv, Av, M or C), not the automatic setting.
In the guidebook for the S2 IS it states: To activate the super macro mode, hold down the macro button on the side of the lens.. blahblah.. don’t quote me. I started using super macro a couple months ago and holding it down works every single time for me. I really enjoy the capabilities of the S2 IS.
