theme song
I hate getting songs stuck in my head — particularly songs that correspond to current events because the more I work on graphics related a given event, the more stubbornly that song refuses to disappear.
Three weeks ago, the tune that affixed itself to my brain was Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks” — a song I think I’ve only heard once or twice, but which kept bubbling up to the surface as I was making a map of the New Orleans levee system. I barely know the song, yet every minute or so just the title kept popping up. 17th Street Canal. whentheleveebreaks. London Avenue Canal. whentheleveebreaks. Industrial Canal. whentheleveebreaks.
To my great relief, the levee effect ended after a while … only to be replaced by “Lovely Rita” by The Beatles.
I used to like “Lovely Rita.” It’s chirpy, jaunty, happy, fun. I used to like it so much I even had it as a ringtone on my cellphone at one point.
No longer.
Thanks to the hurricane, I’ve had the song stuck in my head for the past two days — and nonstop the past six hours, as I’ve been working on hurricane graphics.
“Lovely RITA, meeter maid…!”
Gah. Rita, Rita, go away!
