renamed

After a week or so of deliberations, the new name of Alexandria’s Del Ray Dreamery is…

That Custard Place in Del Ray

So anticlimactic. Hundreds of user-submitted suggestions, and that’s the winning name? Granted, my lack of enthusiasm may be due, in part, to a lackluster experience this summer at That Little Mexican Cafe, a restaurant in Evanston, Ill. It’s a gimmicky name, and doesn’t begin to encompass everything the dessert shop has to offer. And would people not in the know understand that the “custard” in the name refers to frozen custard?

Comments

That Custard Place gets no love from DCist, which calls Del Ray a “witless wonder.” Silly name aside, though, I plan to stop by the frozen custard shop on Sunday or Monday, when the featured flavor is my favorite: Mexican Chocolate.

(Thanks to Rob for the DCist pointer.)

Is it true “That Custard Place” has a new name? Again?! I guess it is “The Dairy Godmother”. Uh… hmmm.

I haven’t heard about any re-re-christenings of the former Dreamery, and the frozen custard shop’s Web site still refers to itself as “That Custard Place in Del Ray.” I think “The Dairy Godmother” was a runner-up name, though.

I guess the Dreamery’s new name is The Dairy Godmother now. They’ve rechristened the Web site again. I still need to go back there sometime this month. “Starry Night,” the featured flavor on Wednesday, sounds pretty yummy.
