seen: leaf collection

Seen in the latest issue of The Citizen, a monthly newsletter from Arlington County:

Arlington’s annual curbside leaf collection program has begun. Residents can rake their leaves in loose piles at the curb for vaccuum truck collection; the first pass is in November, the second, in December.

A vacuum truck that sucks up all the fallen leaves? Despite the fact that I don’t even have a lawn, this just seems so cool — to the point where part of me wants to hang out in a neighborhood and watch the trucks do their thing, at least for a couple minutes so I can see how it works.

I have vague memories of helping my dad (or at least trying to help) rake up leaves when I was a kid. The worst part was getting the leaves into the bags. But with this, you can just rake your leaves in piles by the curb — no bagging required. Plus, the collected leaves are recycled into mulch.

So, vacuum truck, no bagging required and environmentally friendly disposal. What’s not to like?
