driving directions

While looking up driving directions for my trip to South Carolina over the weekend, I noticed an odd quirk between the new Flash-based Yahoo! Maps and the “classic” Yahoo! Maps: Both displayed the exact same directions and distance travelled (446.8 miles), but “classic” put the driving time at 6 hours, 52 minutes, while the “new, improved” system estimated it at 8 hours, 41 minutes. The “classic” Yahoo! Maps estimation is closer to being correct: We made it to our destination in about 7 ½ hours, including stops for gas. It’s strange that the formulas used by each application would be so different; I wonder how they make their calculations.
