going down to south park

southparkme.gifIf I was a South Park character, I’d probably look something like this…

The South Park Studio is a fun little Flash app that lets you create — with a surprisingly impressive array of options — your very own South Park avatar.

Speaking of avatars … Just by virtue of example, Annie’s gotten me hooked on Yahoo! Avatars (the result of which appears on the right rail of the index page these days). It’s fun to tinker with my virtual self’s clothes and hair … although I’m actually more impressed by the options available for those South Park avatars than by Yahoo!’s offerings.

Is it a sign of utter self-absorption that, when given the opportunity to create an avatar — whether online or in a game — my first inclination is always to recreate myself and those closest to me, rather than attempt a dramatic departure from my “real” self? (Alternately, I could posit that I see my virtual self as simply an extension of my Self, and my efforts at avatar-building are just an attempt to further erase/blur the lines between my physical and virtual identities.)
