evening activities

Writer Dave Barry at a booksigning at the Olsson's in ArlingtonGetting the wedding invitations printed yesterday went surprisingly well, so, instead of spending my evening cutting up invites, I ventured over to the Olsson’s bookstore down the street for a reading/booksigning by humorist Dave Barry. I came in a few minutes late, just as Barry was relating a story of Today Show correspondent Ann Curry trying to tame his pouffy hair with saliva earlier that morning. Then he told another story about running into Ted Koppel on the train from New York to D.C., and he thanked the D.C. area for being such a wonderful source of inspiration for his work. He followed up by reading a few finance “tips” from his new book, Dave Barry’s Money Secrets, in which he lampoons the personal finance industry, then took questions from the audience. Funny stuff — and I was impressed by how knowledgeable-yet-not-embarrassingly-fanboyish the questions from the audience were.

I didn’t stick around for the booksigning, as I didn’t actually purchase a copy of the book, but there was a huge crowd of people waiting for their chance to meet the author — even bigger than the crowd for British writer Nick Hornby this past summer.
