personal jesus

This is so, incredibly weird that, two hours later, I’m still not entirely sure how to react to it. I’m vaguely intrigued, vaguely repulsed, vaguely befuddled by this story in The Guardian:

The BBC plans to mark the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ this Easter with an hour-long live procession through the streets of Manchester featuring pop stars from The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays and featuring songs by The Smiths and New Order.

In the programme, called Manchester Passion, a character representing Jesus will sing the legendary Joy Division anthem Love Will Tear Us Apart before dueting his arch-betrayer Judas on the New Order hit Blue Monday, according to senior church sources involved in the production.

(“BBC’s Jesus sings Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” - 01/26/06)

And now I have the “chorus” from “Love Will Tear Us Apart” running through my head, over and over in a constant loop.

Um, yeah, that totally sounds wacked. How come they didn’t invite Depeche Mode? Because New Order = Jesus?

I think that The Smiths and New Order got the nod b/c they’re originally from Manchester. Depeche Mode, while also British, are from Basildon, which is east of London, near the coast. (At least that’s what AMG tells me.)
