heartbeats

Sony BRAVIA advertisementDoug just linked to a new ad from Sony-Europe for their BRAVIA television. I don’t really know what the bouncy balls have to do with a Sony television, but it’s a beautiful, hypnotic ad.

I had a bit of deja vu when I first saw the video because I knew I’d seen those bouncy balls before. Then I remembered: Photos from the video shoot appeared on Flickr back in July.

Doug also mentions that the song used in the advertisement is a José González cover of “Heartbeats,” by The Knife. The song appeared on González’s 2005 folk album Veneer (iTMS). I haven’t listened to much of his work, but I’ve really liked what I’ve heard so far. A few weeks ago, I stumbled across his haunting cover of Kylie Minogue’s “Hand on Your Heart(iTMS), which sounds nothing like the original. (And I mean that in the best way possible.)

Oh thank sweet baby jebus! I’ve been dying to know the name of that song, but never whilst in reach of the interwebs. I kept forgetting to search for it. It was also used in this video about an “art installation” featuring these cool little new-age graffiti objects called LED Throwies (which I saw originally on BoingBoing).

Anyway, thanks a bunch for finding this and posting about it. That Sony Bravia commercial is amazing… I’ve watched it over and over since I first saw it online (from Digg or somewhere). I’d love to see some video of the clean-up operations, too, but I haven’t found anything online.

All I could find about the post-shoot clean-up (via a cursory Google search) was this mention in a SFGate.com blog:

Word is the film crew covered the storm drains, caught most of the balls at the bottom of the hill with big nets, and had unfortunate PAs pick the rest out of the bushes.

(Culture Blog!: “In case you were wondering what 10,000 bouncy balls going down a San Francisco hill might look like …” - 07/29/05)

A pretty long ad (I guess only seen on the internet?) for something as simple as a monitor…but it’s nice to see The Knife (and people who cover’em) getting exposure. Good find on the Flickr…I knew it seemed familiar, but I couldn’t remember why.
