obsolete

It’s official: Aegis, my two-year-old Powerbook, is now obsolete.

Macworld reported yesterday that, with the release of the new MacBook Pro, the Apple Store online has stopped selling the 15” Powerbook.

As if to underscore that point, my hard drive made a horrifying grinding noise early this morning which makes me worry that a total meltdown is imminent. I’ve backed up all my files to the LaCie, and I think I can get a new, better hard drive for less than $250. (I’m tempted to spring for a processor upgrade, too, but that’s getting greedy.)

My quandary is installation: I’m planning to go to the Apple Store in Clarendon to get an estimate, but I’m pretty sure that having their Mac “geniuses” fix my laptop is going to cost me a pretty penny. Can anyone recommend someplace local that won’t charge me an arm and a leg and can turn it around fairly quickly?

Hey there. Talk about feeling obsolete, I think mine is even older than yours and my logic board died this week! At any rate I’m trying to hold off another 6 months. That said, I did upgrade my harddrive and I have a GREAT recommendation for you. I used techrestore.com. They are based in California but don’t let that frighten you. They were AWESOME, I can’t say enough good things. Place your order online today, get a box overnighted to you. Drop your laptop in and mail it. It’s returned overnight also and shipping is INCLUDED. Yes, and the prices were the best around. I would marry their store if that was possible ;-). Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! Their prices do seem pretty reasonable for the service you’re getting.

On a related note, this post the other day at Cult of Mac makes me glad that I haven’t been having battery problems. I think I actually said “Holy crap!” out loud when I first saw the photos. (“Is This Why Apple Recalls Bad Batteries?” - 02/22/06)

While I haven’t disassembled an aluminum PowerBook yet, I have replaced hard drives in both models of iBook, as well as TiBooks, Pismos, and Duos. If you want, bring it downstairs sometime and I’ll take a whack at it.

under the knife: My laptop has just gone in for "surgery" to replace its fussy hard drive. I can only hope that's all that's wrong with it. Before I left for Seattle, it was making those unsettling grinding sounds on an increasing basis... read more »
