clean slate

One of the best things about getting a new hard drive is that it’s almost like having a brand-new computer.

Everything’s clean. Everything’s fresh. Everything’s running really fast because you haven’t installed anything beyond the bare minimum. Now’s the time to reset your organization scheme and find proper places for things. Make those value judgements about which files are worth bringing back and what can be relegated to the backup drive. Install some updated software.

There have been a few moments where I’ve had to trust my ingrained habits rather than memory alone to restore some things back the way they were before. It took me a few tries to re-sort the buttons in Mail, as I realized that, before, I had preferred my “Get Mail” button first and the “Delete/Junk” buttons last, and I had to add a “Flag” button.

It’s all very zen, my little bonsai laptop. Pruning, fertilizing, adjusting, resetting. Until it’s perfect.

Mmm, that’s the *best* feeling. Is this harddrive a lot larger? I remember feeling amazed at how much extra space I had left when I jumped from a 40 gig to a 100 gig…Now that’s almost full. Hrmmm. I think it’s a race we can’t win.

It wasn’t that huge a leap for me: I went from 80GB to 100GB. And while I know I’m probably going to fill it up pretty quickly — darn those photos and MP3s — it’s nice to have some breathing room right now. I’ve been meaning to archive some things, and this would be a good time to take care of that.
