apple-sanctioned winmacs

Fasciminating news today from Macworld:

Apple today introduced Boot Camp, new public-beta software for Mac OS X that lets users of Intel Macs boot directly into Microsoft Windows XP. While the move may contradict previous statements by Apple, the company said they still have no intention of fully supporting Windows on the Mac.

I guess when even the New York Times’s David Pogue is writing about how to hack your Mac to run Windows, it’s in Apple’s best interest to alter its stance and offer a sanctioned method to run both operating systems.

Still, the idea of running Windows on a Mac feels dirty — though certainly useful. At least it’ll be a heckuva lot better than the painfully kludgy Virtual PC software I used to use to run Windows on top of OS X.

Comments

Wired ran an interesting follow-up yesterday, with a story about third-party companies’ efforts to create virtualization software which allows users to run OS X and Windows at the same time. (“Windows on Mac, Simultaneously” - 04/06/06)
