songs of the moment: commercial edition
I’ve been watching more live TV than usual lately, thanks to the World Cup and the new season of The Venture Brothers, which also means I’ve been sitting through more commercials. Two recent commercials in particular, with their catchy songs, have become minor obessions. I finally broke down and bought them off iTunes tonight.
- “The Birds and the Bees” by Patrick and Eugene - This jaunty little banjo tune is featured in Volkswagen’s ad for the new Rabbit. It’s going to be stuck in my head for the next week. (Thanks to the folks at the Adtunes.com forum for solving that particular riddle.)
- “Eanie Meany” by Jim Noir - Adidas has been using this catchy “kids playing soccer”-themed song for its World Cup “+10” ad campaign, which features two boys who challenge each other to a game of soccer and then pick some of the best soccer players in the world to play on their respective teams.

Thank you! I’ve been wondering about that Rabbit song ever since I saw the commercial for the first time. It’s almost enough to make me want one, but only with the multi-colored doors.
Glad to be of service. Those cars do look pretty cute.
Have you seen the VW site for the new Rabbit? The car customization feature is called “Breed Your Rabbit.” And when you finish your car, you can “breed” it with another Rabbit car — basically, the two cars race each other for a little bit and disappear into an underground parking garage; then you get a little family tree. After you’ve done that once, you can choose to breed your Rabbit with another Rabbit — only this time, a real rabbit is among the choices. The product of Rabbit + rabbit is kinda funny, with sideview mirrors for ears.
We’re watching the part of Rabbit ad where the cars are doing their thing (i.e. before the text explaning that it’s the VW Rabbit) when …
Dari [out loud]: “The Rabbit’s back?”
VW ad [one second later]: “It’s back.”
You know it’s good advertising when the advertiser anticipates the question you’re going to ask and provides the answer in a timely manner.
