pourquoi?

Rob, Dari and I got together yesterday afternoon to watch the World Cup finals. We were rooting for France to win over Italy, largely out of distaste for the Italian team’s propensity to dive and generally act like drama queens in an attempt to draw more fouls. We also had a certain amount of respect for soccer veteran Zinedine Zidane, the captain of the French team.

And, like so many spectators, we were baffled when Zidane head-butted Italy’s Marco Materazzi, earning a swift red card ejection from the game. While Zidane clearly deserved the red card for his action, the question now is what Materazzi do to provoke him, and why did he allow himself to lash out like that with the championship on the line? So far no one knows for sure.

Still, there’s some humor to be found in it: One enterprising Italian fan has made a game out of it, pitting a head-butting Zidane against an army of oncoming Materazzis. It’s silly, but still worth a laugh.
