photo of the day: splendor sine occasu

Splendor Sine Occasu

Our second day in Victoria, B.C., Rob and I walked over to the Parliament Buildings to see if we could take a tour inside. We’d just missed the morning tour, but we were told that we were welcome to wander around the public areas on our own. We decided to spend part of the morning exploring the building and taking photos and then return later in the day for an afternoon tour.

During our self-guided “tour,” we kept running into a small group of Parliament tour guides in training. The leader obviously knew her material, and we heard offer her trainees lots of tips and trivia tidbits to appeal to tourists from the United States. (For example, if I remember correctly, much of the wood and stone in the main Parliament chamber was originally from Indiana and Kentucky.)

When we returned for the tour later in the afternoon, the woman we’d seen earlier was our guide. She told stories and offered historical tidbits about various parts of the building, frequently using phrases like “Did I tell you that…?” or “Have you heard that…?” to segue to a different topic or particularly juicy bit of trivia.
