following the conflict

Map of Israel and LebanonThis afternoon, we launched an interactive map/multimedia feature on washingtonpost.com that takes a different approach to telling the story of what’s going on right now in Israel and Lebanon. The map highlights the day’s flashpoints and summarizes key developments (with links to the relevant stories for more information), while the gallery and featured videos/panoramas tell the story in that visual, often visceral, way that text alone might strain to convey. Between the powerful imagery and the “day in brief” map, the goal is is to offer visitors a means to quickly get up to speed with the current situation and to easily find more detailed information.

I designed the page, using a beautiful map from the Post’s Nathaniel Vaughn Kelso as my base. Nelson Hsu took that design and gave it life in Flash, repurposing a photo gallery he’d set up for the Olympics and creating a slick app for our editors to plot new flashpoints on the map as new developments arise.
