on the pitch
So I’ve somehow allowed myself to be talked into joining a fledgling soccer team.
Actually, it didn’t take that much convincing: One of the videographers at work extended an invitation and made the prospect sound sufficiently non-threatening for someone like me, possessing a vague interest in the sport but no experience beyond watching the World Cup on television. (Though, surprisingly, I do own a soccer ball. It’s been sitting in the closet, untouched, for months.)
I think the plan for the team, longer-term, is to practice and scrimmage on a regular basis to build up skills and stamina, and then actually join a local soccer league. The team’s been meeting for a few weeks at a local elementary school, but tonight’s the first time I’ve been able to attend.
Here goes nothing…
Edited August 4, 12:22 a.m. - Good lord, I’m out of shape. And while I’m okay at just kicking the ball around, I’m hopeless in a scrimmage situation, where my first instinct when someone gets in my way is to kick the ball as far away from me as possible — even if no one from my team is around. Yikes.
