twenty-seven

Another year, another birthday.

Birthdays aren’t as fun as they used to be. No “princess for a day” treatment, no trip to Chuck E. Cheese with all my first-grade buddies, no birthday cake with candles, no pile of gift-wrapped action figures. Instead, it’s another day at work.

Don’t get me wrong — I still enjoy birthdays. But they’re much more subdued affairs these days.

Moreso than New Year’s, even, it feels almost like an annual review — a time where I should re-evaluate what I’m doing and set goals for the year ahead.

But I’m tired. I thought getting away to Tucson would help, but that “burnt out” feeling came back within days of my return.

Perhaps it’s fortuitous that this has coincided with birthday-time, because it means that my annual “reassessment” could include looking at why I’ve been so burnt out lately and what I can do to improve that, such as getting involved in things that genuinely interest me — things I can get excited about, rather than simply new obligations. And setting goals may help; I think I need milestones, or else I risk sinking further into this rut.

That, and I think I need a nap.

On a more trivial note, HAPPENING NOW: Apparently I share a birthday with CNN’s The Situation Room, which celebrates its first anniversary today. I love FishBowlDC’s photo of Wolf Blitzer in shades.

Happy Birthday! Ahh, twenty-seven. Such a great age. I’ll miss it, even though it’s only been gone for two days.

Happy Birthday from the Aiello family. Try and relax tonight. Take a bath, eat some yummy food…you deserve it!
