Sunset over Solomons Island, Maryland

Rob picked me up from work on Tuesday evening, and we drove out of town toward a destination known only to him. The mini road trip went a long way toward easing my birthday blues: We chatted, I played deejay, and I even got a little nap in.

About two hours later, we arrived at our “surprise” destination: Solomons Island, a peninsula in Calvert County, Md., that’s home to a riverfront boardwalk and an array of seafood restaurants. We had a nice dinner on the back deck at Solomons Pier, watching the sun sink behind the horizon as we savored our platters of crab-stuffed rockfish and seafood assortments.
