decoding the rambaldi dvd

Part of a promotional image from the Rambaldi DVD setOut of random interest (and a desire to distract myself from condo anxiety), I’ve been clicking around the promotional Web site for the Alias complete series DVD set. I like the graphics they’re using, though a bit surprised that they’re focusing so much on the artifacts, with very little imagery of cast members. Then again, I suppose this set is aimed more at die-hard fans rather than occasional or newbie viewers, so they can afford to focus on the show’s mythology rather than win over new converts. Otherwise, I doubt they’d make the trivia challenges so hard.

(Solutions after the jump.)

Upon first entering the site, visitors are asked:

Enter the city where Rambaldi’s legacy began:

After some failed tries and a few Google searches, I finally found the answer, Parma, on the Television Without Pity Alias discussion board.

Inside, you get a shadowed artifact box with a little magic eye you can use to “reveal” things in the background. To the left of the box is a Rambaldi eye artifact. Click on that and get the opportunity to submit a question. You’ll be rewarded with a desktop wallpaper.

If you move the magic eye over the top right corner of the box, you’ll see that the box sparkles. Click on the sparkle, and the box will start to spin. Two of the exposed sides of the box have a puzzle associated with them. I’m assuming that two others also will have puzzles, but that they haven’t been added yet. I think the top of the box will offer a final puzzle once the other four puzzles have been completed.

One of the active puzzles involves matching photos of Sydney Bristow in disguise with the correct mission. I think it’s pretty easy for regular viewers of the show, so I won’t go over the answers here.

The other active puzzle, though, was really hard, involving matching up random Rambaldi artifacts with the locations in which they were discovered. It took me forever to figure out the solution. It’s nice that the game only plops an artifact in a location if you’ve guessed correctly, but the hit targets are frustratingly small, so there were a number of times when my guesses were correct but were rejected. You get three “mistakes” before the game makes you start over again. The solutions:

Hourglass - LA
  • Music Box - Siberia
  • Page - Kandahar
  • Box - DSR
  • Brainwave Scanner - DC
  • Bomb - Switzerland
  • Vial - Namibia
  • Indicator - Buenos Aires
  • The payoff is a page with several artifact-centric wallpapers and an answer to a supposedly fan-submitted question:

One among you asked the following:

“Who or What Is the Passenger?”

    The Truth:
    “Nadia was the Passenger.”
    - Jesse Alexander (writer, seasons 1-5)

More truth will be revealed this fall on DVD.

Yeah, that was helpful. The whole “Nadia is the Passenger” thing was a big plot point in season four. What never made sense was what the significance of that designation was supposed to be, and how the whole “The Chosen One and the Passenger are suposed to fight to the death” prophecy was really supposed to play out. Meh.

Still, I’m a dork (and a bit of a glutton for punishment, apparently), and no doubt I’ll return to the site in the coming months as they roll out new trivia challenges.

    Comments

I have reached in my quest to solve the puzzles at the center of the box saying “Irina”, and in the upper left and right corner is “I” and “II”. I cannot get anything to happen clicking aroung the entire site. I am guessing that this is the next puzzle. Any thoughts??

That’s as far as I’ve gotten as well. I’m assuming that they’ll put up parts III and IV closer to the DVD release date (late November, according to Amazon).

It would appear there in nothing left to do in the puzzle other than to buy it.
At least I cannot find another action to take. Anyone else?

It took me a few times to get all the peices into the correct spot since they are dark and seem to go into the correct place.Once I finished it Another ‘player’ asked question was answered. “How could Rambaldi have drawn Sydney?” the answer was that Rambaldi was a ‘Visionary who could write machine code and made blueprints for machines including their serial numbers”

So I moved onto side 4 it asks about Season 3 episode 17 The Frame.
The first thing you have to do is put cities into order on what cities did this quest take Sydney and Vaughn. Once that is accomplished it asks trivia questions about what they did in the cities.Ive gotton as far as the third city -12st mission and solved it and that is where the whole thing seems to ‘freeze’ for me showing a picture of Syd in a horrible red kinky wig disguise and Vaughn holding a tray with champagne on it. I can get no further..WTH?

I finished it all. It is pretty lame but it kept me interested while it lasted. If anyone needs help just ask.
