top fonts

Signal vs. Noise points out a 2004 study of popular typefaces used by American newspapers. The Poynter suite topped the list. We use quite that font quite a lot at the Post and at post.com — particularly Poynter Bold Condensed, which has become a standard for our promotional graphics and headers for news content.

I have to give a shout-out to Interstate, which also made the list. The font, based on the typeface used for U.S. interstate road signs, has been a personal favorite for the past couple years. Rob and I used it on our wedding invitations earlier this year.

Given all the newspaper redesigns that have taken place over the last two years, I’m curious what that list of popular typefaces might look like now.
