layover

On Wednesday, Rob and I had a three-hour layover at Chicago’s Midway International Airport. So we did something slightly crazy: We went out for pizza.
Rob had it all planned out: Land at Midway around 11:30 a.m., hop on the El into town, disembark downtown, grab lunch at Giordano’s and hightail it back to the airport for our flight to Tucson. And it all came off pretty smoothly!
We ordered the stuffed spinach pizza — our favorite — and thanks to the magic of pre-ordering and some overestimation on said pizza’s ETA by our waitress, we got it in a pretty reasonable amount of time, considering it was lunchtime. We even had enough time to manage some minor wandering, including a quick tour of a faux German food/shopping village in Daley Plaza and a duck into the former Marshall Fields building to admire the beautiful mosaic ceiling. And we made it back to the aiport and sailed through security with about 45 minutes to spare. It was a bit risky, but so much fun — and so much better than hanging out in an airport for three hours.

How fun! At least you weren’t flying in or out of Denver :)
No kidding! We actually saw the news of the Denver snowstorm while we were waiting for our pizza; we were definitely grateful we weren’t flying through there.
Oooh, I’m so glad it worked out for you! I barely made my flight to Florida this morning what with a mis-reading of the ticket (I thought my flight left at 10:30 instead of 10:00 am), and an insanely long check-in line. I ran straight from dropping off my bags to the gate and walked right on the plane. So glad it worked out and I would have preferred to have pizza and wander a bit around Chicago.
Owch. Glad you made it!
That kind of thing has happened to us twice. The first time, we were in Chicago, and I had all our flight info in the calendar on my iPod. When I changed the clock on the iPod to reflect Chicago / Central time, the iPod also shifted all the times in my calendar back an hour. So we rushrushrushed to the airport, only to find that we had a whole extra hour.
The second time was when we were on our honeymoon. We were running late to get to Dulles, and when we arrived it turned out we were even later than we thought: The scheduled flight time was actually a half hour earlier than what we had on our e-tickets, purchased a few months earlier. And once we got through security, our flight wasn’t on the boards so we had to ask around and guess the terminal / gate. We were so lucky we didn’t miss it.
Several hours later, as we stood in line at Customs in Vancouver, I checked my e-mail and found an urgent message from Expedia, sent about an hour earlier. I called the number provided in the e-mail. The message: The flight time for our flight out of Dulles had changed. Thanks, Expedia.
