one thing resolved

Quick Freeze

I’m still formulating my list of of new year’s not-resolutions. (Actually, I’ve been working on this since my last birthday, when I do my real annual “re-assessment.”) Beyond the usual “lose weight / exercise / eat better / save money” goals, I have settled on one thing: I want to take more photos.

My newfound zeal is partly inspired by the wonderful photo fodder I found in Tucson over Christmas, and partly by a great documentary I watched last night about Annie Leibovitz. Granted, I’m nowhere near her league, but I really do enjoy taking photos — particularly nature photography. There’s such a thrill in finding a great shot or, at home, spotting something interesting in a photo that I hadn’t noticed at the time.

And beyond the photos themselves, the act of going out and seeking good photo fodder means that I’m more involved in the world. I’m exploring, I’m seeing new things (or trying to see familiar things in new ways), I’m breaking out of the humdrum routine — That in itself is a wonderful feeling, even if the photos themselves don’t turn out well.

So, a resolution: New photos in the new year.
