do-over for the cure
To some extent, I’ve been hiding in shame from the blog this week. (Granted, I also was ridiculously busy this week, but The Shame just made me even less inclined to blog.)
The reason for my blog avoidance: I totally blew it with Race for the Cure last weekend.
I paid my registration fee, (belatedly) blogged about the event, raised some money (thanks, Mom!) and set the alarm for Saturday morning.
And then I overslept.
I do recall the alarm going off around 7 a.m., followed by a murmured half-conversation about how we reallyreally needed to get up and do this thing. The next thing I knew, it was 11 a.m. and it was all over.
I resolved to try to make up for it somehow the next day, but on Sunday it rained all day.
So instead I carried the guilt with me through the past week and made it my mission to do my own Race (well, Walk) for the Cure on Saturday. And I made good on my pledge this time: I donned my t-shirt, Metroed down to the Mall and retraced the original 5K race route through downtown. As a seemingly added bit of penance, I also had to contend with hordes of Girl Scouts from around the country who had converged on the Metro and the Mall for a massive event. (Mix one part hyperactive pre-teen with one part clueless tourist and multiply by a hundred thousand, and you’ll get something approximating what was on the Mall today.)
But it’s done: I (belatedly) lived up to the pledge I made to do this race. And while I no doubt still deserve some ribbing for having overslept it in the first place, I can at least show my face again.
