random trivia of the day

From the “I’d never really given it much thought, but now that I’ve read it I can’t get rid of the mental image” files…

Slate had an explainer yesterday explaining some of the child labor rules about the employment of newborns and infants in Hollywood. In it was a factoid about the kind of “makeup” that can be used for babies in birth scenes:

Screen Actors Guild guidelines do cover condiment usage. Grape, red currant, and cherry jelly can be used to simulate birth-related fluids. Strawberry, raspberry, and K-Y jellies are a no-no, for fear of allergic reactions.

That’s just kinda … ew. But then, I guess, how else are they supposed to do it?
