photo of the day: architectural angels

Angels

Just north of Houston in Manhattan stands the only building in New York City designed by architect Louis Sullivan, known more for his work in Chicago and the Midwest. The Bayard-Condict Building was built between 1897 and 1899. According to Wikipedia, “[f]igural sculptures of angels were added at the request of the client, over Sullivan’s objections.” (I don’t doubt that statement, as Sullivan always seemed more interested in complicated organic patterns than human shapes.)
