once more, with feeling

photo_20070720.jpg

Last night, I went with some friends to the Buffy Singalong at the Avalon Theatre in DC.

Yes, a singalong to the Buffy: The Vampire Slayer musical episode “Once More, With Feeling.”

For some reason, in talking about this, I feel like I should be somehow ironic about the utter nerdity of it all, but I’m going to embrace it. After all, I did write a 22-page paper about Freudian themes in Buffy back in grad school. I might as well own it.

So, yeah, it was fun — and I did sing along! (It had been a long time since I’d seen the musical episode, actually, and I was surprised at how many of the songs I remembered.) All the audience members were given little goody bags with props for key moments in the episode: confetti poppers for the Willow / Tara love scene, bubbles for Dawn’s ballet dance, a kazoo for Buffy’s big admission and a finger-puppet monster for the closing credits. And plastic fangs, but those were more for fun — you can’t really sing while wearing them.

I guess it was like a nerdier Rocky Horror Picture Show (though I’ve never seen Rocky Horror, so I can’t really say), but not quite as crazy. And while I was keeping an eye out for people in costume, there was nary a Spike in sight.

I was there, too (I was the one who got the “What proved Tara wasn’t a demon?” question right)! And one of my friends went as Spike, though with neither the black coat nor the bleached hair. There seemed to be a lack of costuming in general, though, other than the few people in Sunnydale shirts. Are you going again in November?

Oh, cool! :) (And congrats on winning the trivia question!)

Thinking of going again in November, but I haven’t decided yet. You?

I’m glad I went to the Buffy Singalong while I had the chance: Lawyers at Fox have pulled the plug on movie theater screenings of television show episodes for the time being due to licensing issues.

Lawyers for Twentieth Century Fox Television, a division of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., told a licensing company that had given the green light for the sing-along events that it had gone beyond limits of the show’s licensing agreements.

Chris Alexander, a spokesman for the studio, said that “significant payments” would have to be made to Hollywood unions for the show to be screened in movie theaters, which is a highly unusual arrangement anyway and usually reserved for situations like one-time charity events.

(Thanks to Chris for the link.)
