2007
five years
In 2002, I took what were, for me, some big risks: I applied to grad school, took a two-week trip to Italy by myself (albeit with a tour group) and quit my job to move across the country from Phoenix, Ariz. to Washington, D.C. — without a new job lined up.
Granted, none of this was done on a whim.
The trip to Italy had originally been scheduled for September 13, 2001. I’d been mulling over the idea of grad school for over a year by the time I actually applied. (Coincidentally, I found out about my acceptance to Georgetown on my last day in Rome.) And in anticipation of the move to D.C. I’d saved some money, secured a commitment for freelance work and scheduled a couple job interviews.
But for me, they were all huge leaps of faith, forcing me to really think about who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do with my life at a time when I was feeling kind of stale and listless and needed some kind of shock to my system.
Five years later, I’m still here, living and working in D.C., and things worked out even better than I could have hoped.
Here’s to risk-taking and goal-making.

I went to a little tech school in Tempe in 1995-96. I haven’t been back since, but I’m told the area has expanded so much.
Ever been to Cave Creek? I had a friend who’s mom own a small horse ranch there. It was so open and serene. I Google-Earthed the area recently, and saw SO MANY houses built.

I’ve not been to Cave Creek, but I recall that it seemed to be a hot spot for new home construction when I lived in the area. Then again, they were building houses everywhere along the fringes of the metro area. By now, Casa Grande is practically a suburb.
