plugging back in

Rob and I just got back from two days in Peaks of Otter, Va., just off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Roanoke. The place was just beautiful.

But for someone who’s used to being plugged in nearly 24/7, there were definite withdrawal pains.

I’d gone into the trip thinking that, while Rob was in board meetings, I could do some reading, some hiking, maybe catch up on some work or freelance. What I didn’t realize until I got there was just how completely disconnected the place is. Our room at the lodge didn’t have a telephone, much less wifi. And my cellphone got absolutely no reception.

If we’d stayed there another couple days, I think I actually could have enjoyed being unplugged for a little while. I just wish I’d known ahead of time, so I could prepare myself. As it was, I had to soothe the jittery twitches of “gotta check my e-mail on my phone … OH WAIT. dammit” quite a few times.

That said, I did quite enjoy it there, and look forward to going back sometime. (More on that tomorrow — with photos!)
