peaks of otter

Butterfly and Queen Anne's Lace

On Thursday and Friday, Rob and I drove out to Peaks of Otter so he could attend a board retreat for the College Communicators Association.

Peaks of Otter is a series of three peaks just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, not too far from Roanoke. (According to an exhibit at the nearby National Park Service visitors center, they’re not really sure where the name came from.) We stayed at the Peaks of Otter Lodge, in the shadow of those mountains, overlooking a nice man-made lake.

It’s so nice to be a spouse at events like these — no pressure, no responsibility. While Rob was in meetings, I spent my time hiking and catching up on some reading. And with the complete lack of Internet and cellphone reception, it was actually kind of nice to be unplugged for a little while (withdrawal jitters aside).

Comments

I’ve been to the Peaks of Otter on a number of occasions since I was a kid. Always a fun time. I’ve never been in the middle of summer, though. Sounds like a good possibility of it being excrutiatingly hot…
